I am just starting to look around at GPS devices. Anyone have any recommendations for units under $200. Am I wasting my money going with this cheap of a GPS? I want something that can track my route, get me back to my car, and have the ability to save routes. It would be nice to have topography maps that show water. hills, etc.., but its not a must.

I have several rides saved for the following areas. The Track files will work on a Garmin GPS. If you want any of them PM me with your email and tell me which ones you want and I will send them to you. You will have to use Garmin Mapsource to read these files. It came with your GPS for free.

You will need to make sure you are running the latest version of Garmin Mapsource. An update can be had for free at:

Saturday, I got a little "misplaced" on the way back to the truck, and it was nothing serious with all the riders running around, it was easy enough to ask people which way to go, but I was wondering what would happen if I had decided to do a "Go To" on the quest, how it would know to guide me back to the parking lot, which ...

Have you ever noticed that GPSr mileage is always ~10% less than your odometer readings? Well, there is a reason that happens. I'll try to explain it.

The GPSr measures distance along it's referenced coordinate system, a geodedic spheroid. This is basically an oblated sphere, a purely mathematically described surface, that should(?) represent the average earth surface. The GPSr coordinates are locations on this surface. Some GPSr units also rocord a calculated elevation that may be used ...

Aight, a little different, but how many of ya'll have GPS turn by turn units in your vehicles. We have one in each truck and I don't know how I ever lived without it. We'll go somewhere and then on the way back I'll set it to avoid Highways and start back home. It's amazing how many back roads you think you know, till you get proven wrong by one of these things. Both of the ones we are using are Garmin Nuvi's.........and I absolutly love it.

While I was walking the trails, I snagged 2 more Geocahes. They were both full of goodies and trinkets, but i just signed the log book and left them be. That puts my total up to six caches, I don't do it often, usually just to and from work. this is really fun though, I'm glad Rb12 and TNT started sparking my interest in this, it is a cool hobby

One of the first things I did was buy a Memory Card for mine. I got a 1gb Card cheap at Walmart. This allows me to store more information than the Internal Memory. Especially more Tracks.

If you are going to capture a track for a whole days ride then you should make some adjustments to the default settings.

Here is what I have mine set for and find that it works well for ...

First, some basic GPS history

The Global Positioning System was invented by the U.S. Department of Defense and Ivan Gelling using eighteen satellites together with their ground stations primarily as a navigational tool to calculate geographical locations. The satellites are geostationary, or geosynchronous, meaning that they revolve at the same rate as the earth rotates, so they always stay above the same place on the earth’s surface.

Let's start off this new Section with a Survey.

Who has a GPS and What Make and Model?

I have the Garmin Vista HCx. Got it because of the Color Screen, It will accept a memory card and the price was right at Walmart.com. They don't sell these in the store but you can get online.

I am still learning how to make it work for me. I scratch my head everytime I turn it on. But the more I use it the more I like it.

Let's here about your GPS.

Here is a website that list Waterfalls, Landforms, Balds, etc....in Tennessee. It has GPS Coordinates and you can look things up by County. You can download the GPX file and load it into you GPS also.
