Hehehe ,

Bought a 1988 Honda Fourtrax today
Its actually all there and not in terrible shape .

owner said the brakes are locked up from sitting for

about 5 years . The Good : Racks are straight , front bumper is straight ,

the atv is complete as far as I can tell . transmission shifts ( foot shift )

Pulled plug and it looks good , he said it was running fine last time he rode it .

Motor turns over and has compression .

Lights are there ,

Electric starter

Bad :

tires are shot

brakes ? shot / locked up ( I've seen this a lot on older models for sale )

I'm sure carb will need much attention ?

Tank looks ok ?

I think I can spend less than $ 300 bucks and get this thing running good enough for riding

between the house / workshop and out in the fields / woods behind the house LoL .

Heck , I figure I can part it out and get $300 for it .

Will give me something to tinker with for a while . I like the challenge of getting something

like this and seeing if I ( with VERY limited knowledge and lack of any decent mech. skills !! )

can get it running .

If anybody has any 300 parts laying around , let me know !

I had a 1988 Foreman 350 fulltime 4x4 with about 10,000 miles on it when I sold it a couple of months ago...it's on a cattle ranch in Colorado...still running everyday...Honda's are slooooow, but they are tough!

Those old bikes are some good one's...good luck on your new "project"

If you part it out let me know what you want for the rear end.

if metal tank is in good condition it only is worth $125.00 excellent condition $200 since all they make as a replacement is plastic. Rear end is worth $300.

After seeing what used parts were going for on certain sites , I figured I'd

do ok either way .

Owner says it was going fine , needs master cyl. , rear brakes worked on and

it is good to go , oh , and a battery .

I'll tinker around this weekend on it and decide what I'm going to do .

tank is in pretty good shape .

Need to find a tube for the rear tire though . Its leaking air pretty fast out the

valve stem nut .

Messed around with the 300 today .

Pulled the top off the carb and it was CLEAN !

Tank has some rust dust in it , but over all looks pretty good inside with no leaks .

( watched a 300 tank go for $95 with shipping on ebay ! )

Sprayed a little carb cleaner down the throat and after the 3rd kick ( didn't have

battery in it yet ) I got a pop , 5th kick and it started and I let it run about 4 seconds

because the oil needs changed .

Used the old battery out of the A.Cat and got the starter to turn over and then

it fired up again using the starter hehehe . Hate to say it , but even Honda

doesn' t make 'em like that any more !

I think all the bearings need changed , got the rear brake to free up enough to

roll it in and out of the workshop . The brakes are the biggest thing keeping

me from making this a ride-able atv again $$$$ . Needs master cyl and who knows

what in the rear drum ? ? ? I know working on Honda brakes ain't cheap ! I

could pick up some used tires pretty cheap for sure , plastics would be a bit

more expensive too , but even used / not broken would do the trick . All the lights

still worked , all the switches , etc . I've been watching parts on ebay and they

aren't very cheap , I just hate to part this thing out when it would take so little to

get it going again .

I'll change the oil a time or two and then let it run a few mintues to see what

shape the carb is in , tried to get the bowl off and you know thoses crappy soft

screws never want to come out without stripping the tops out of them

Transmission shifts like it should too .

I've still not decided on what I'm going to do with it , I hate to sink $ 20 here and

$30 bucks there , I'd say someone could throw $ 400 or less at it and it would get it

going and ready for a trailride if they could do all the labor .

I might find another one of these with a blown motor and do a swap pretty

cheaply too .

Any body have a good suggestion on trying to clean the tank out vs. kreeming it ?

The last tank I had that someone Kreemed was in worse condition than the rust .

Thx

Sounds like a good project but like you said, I would hate to put too much $ in it.

If you know how to do the Kreem right and take your time and pay attention to it it looks good and works great. I have an old 87 250 Fourtrax that I got from my Grandpa (he got it new and that's what I learned to ride on before I got my 79 Suzuki 50) and I did that too it.
