COURT: Counterfeit man
Posted By BOB VAILLANCOURT, THE SUDBURY STAR

The paper that Dale Bobbie's conditional sentence order was printed on at the Sudbury Courthouse on Tuesday was slightly different than the paper he used to print hundreds of counterfeit Canadian $100 and $50 bills.

Bobbie used $17,700 of the counterfeit money, printed on an ink jet printer, to purchase two all-terrain vehicles and some sport memorabilia items in November 2007.

The purchases were made during a three-week period in both Sudbury and Espanola. He paid $6,400 in $100 and $50 bills to purchase an Argo all-terrain vehicle Nov. 7, and then the next day paid $8,900 in $100 and $50 bills for a second Argo ATV in Espanola.

The owner of the hockey memorabilia, purchased Nov. 30, said the collection, which included autographed hockey sweaters and cards, was worth about $10,000 but he took $2,400 in cash -- $100 and $50 bills -- even though it was a much lower amount, because he needed money to go to southern Ontario to see his grandchildren.

Assistant Crown attorney Guy Roy said all of the bills had been printed on an ink jet printer. There was no embossing and no foil, he said. Of the almost 300 bills involved in the three transactions, there were only about a dozen unique serial numbers, he said.

Police caught up with Bobbie after finding his fingerprints on at least one bill from each transaction, said Roy.

Bobbie, 35, pleaded guilty last spring to three counts of possession of counterfeit money and to one count of breaching his bail conditions. His lawyer asked that sentencing not take place until Tuesday to give his client time to offer compensation.

The breach charge was laid in January because Bobbie went to Cuba even though he was not supposed to leave the province.
