PostSubject: 1998 honda recon question   Wed Mar 17, 2010 8:11 pm

ok i have a 98 recon 250, i rebuilt the rear end, new seals and bearings, after i put it back together i removed the fluid level check bolt and filled it up with fluid til fluid came out the level check hole and i noticed fluid coming from another hole on the very bottom, the hole is a few inches away from the drain plug on the bottom of the diff. i dont remember seeing the hole before and i dont remember taking anything out of the hole. it is not threaded from what i can tell so i dont think a bolt was in there, if i look up in it and turn the wheels i can see the gears turning. my question is does anyone have any idea what the hole is for and if something goes in it, like maybe a check ball or something, hopefully someone on here has a recon and is familiar with the rear diff. any help would be appreciated.

I had a recon a looooong time ago but if my memory is correct I dont remember a hole besides the drain plug and maybe a vent line(which would be on top). I would say that if u cant find someone more helpful than me Laughing then you could either tap it and put a short bolt in it or have someone weld it up..

Do u have any pics???? you got me curious. Suspect

no pics but i may try to take one and post it, also when i checked the fluid it was up to the level check hole after sitting for a few months and it has been riden some, i just dont understand why it would be there, cause mud and water could get in it, i thought about just putting some sealer or jb weld in it but i would like to know what it was for first

Does it have a vent hose on top? According to the diagram the only holes on bottom beside the drain is for the skid plate bolts and it is possible that some one threaded to long of bolts and made a hole???

u can see some of the fluid coming out of the hole in the pic. there are two vents on the top of the diff with hoses. the only bolts that i remember taking out of the skid plate i still have in the holes on the diff and they are way to big for this hole.
Ron every diagram i have seen does not have this hole in the picture, its driving me crazy, this is the main reason we havent been riding in a long time cause i dont want to take a chance of messing it up. it is a clean hole so its not like something has made the hole or anything, and from what i can tell it isnt threaded as far up as i can see

I can't see how a skid plate bolt would have made that hole....Looks like the skid plate bolts are along way from that area.

there isnt any hole in the skid to line up with this hole.. i have been looking on ebay for a picture of diffs so i can see if they have that hole and every picture is of the top or sides. none of the bottom.i had mark look at it when he was here a while back and he didnt have a clue either

Ron u can see in the bottom pic there is a bolt sticking through at the rear of the diff and a bolt on the right side of the diff that looks loose, those are for the trailer hitch,
JodyT i believe #15 is attached to the skid plate, not 100% sure but i think i remember seeing that attached.

this is thing has had me stumped for a while. i rebuilt the rearend before christmas and havent let mike take it out yet. i really want to figure this out so i can sell it and find him a good used 4x4

Its not the bolt hole for the skid. It could be the where it was casted. I'd say the inside seal is leaking the oil. scratch

welcome, not able to go to the shop, just got over pneumonia and now getting over blood clots from the pneumonia. so i can't lok through the manual at the shop.
but i may have one here at the house. also check the fourtrax and rincon models, the rear differentials should be identical.

so in other manuals they will read the same.
