Did you happen to notice the barked spots on the trees near the bottom of the carhauler??? It has laid claim to several ATVs... and has broken several bones. Do a search for "carhauler" to find past discussions... and photo links...

The typical landing spot is at the bottom of the gorge... with pieces strown all down the bank...

It takes a bit... quite a bit... of winching to recover an ATV from the bottom of the gorge...

A recovered ATV typically has to either dragged, or hauled, away...

Yes i did notice , i looked all over for any kind of evidence .
I saw some crazy stuff there as well .
Most riders apprently like to go down it , mehh i dont care .
Not a place to lose concentration.

It looked as iff there were old old logs , like and old bridge used to be there .
Hard to tell .

Stories vary but the one that makes the most sense is: The People who own the property there wanted a way to get from the Lower Section to the Upper Section. They brought it in thru the Sand Mines and lowered it over the Bluff Wall with Dozers and some other equipment. If you will notice, the Rubber Tires are still on it and it is bolted to the rock ledge at the top. Not sure how long it has been there but seems like for ever.

Dan is absolutely correct. The Car Hauler will eat your lunch if you loose your concentration. I personally know of about 4-5 that have gone over the edge at the bottom into the gorge. And yes, once that happens they usually get hauled out and not on their own power.

I helped to get one ATV out of the gorge. It fell from the rock below the carhauler, never making it to the carhauler. That ATV was almost totaled, and the owner has since rebuilt it. The owner also lost several square inches of good skin in the process of going over the edge.

I know another one that did get totaled having rolled from midway up the carhauler... into the gorge. Quadkiller can tell you a most entertaining tale as to how this one happened.

If that carhauler could only talk... I'm sure it could tell some interesting tales...

The Car Hauler had some major repairs last summer done to it. The Harlan County Ridge Runners had an 85 wheeler group ride up there and 4 of the members spent the month before the ride getting things in shape up there. One of the things they did was to do some welding repairs to the expanded metal on the Car Hauler.

You can thank the Can Do people that ride Pickett for trying to keep things in good shape up there for all to enjoy.

ROOSTER thanx man , ive been waiting all day for your comment .

Yeah i noticed the rubber , and i was kinda thinking the same thing except i imagined chop trucks dragging it in .
The sand mines are a tiny distance away , wonder which path they used to get it there .Actually they seem about 3 miles at least .

Do people wreck on the rock befor it ????

Or on the actual metal ???

I would think they would slip off the rock befor it , if you are coming up it .
Right where she is about to ride NOT , i did that part upon here request.

WOW amazing stories ....

Usually the rock before it. I believe QuadKiller was on the actual Car Hauler when her rear back wheel dipped into the hole in the expanded metal near the bottom. As Dan said, the rest was carnage.....A big Winch job. I was there for that one and remember saying to myself there sure are alot of smart people here today. It took a large group effort to recover the Quad.

Yeah, I remember that day...we cut out early and took some trails not so traveled...

I went down the car hauler, turned around and came back up it that day, scratched the crap out of one of my front wheels on the guardrail...

The rock leading up to it it tilted badly , other than that i think people just get to crazy .
i saw some real wild teenagers blasting through.
I could see how they might get caught off gaurd here or there .

When the carhauler is damp, it gets extremely slick. Even when dry, if the ATVs have wet tires, I've seen it where the first one can climb it... then have to tow the rest up.

I went down it last winter with snow on it. That gets a little hairy towards the bottom. I had my quad in first gear all the way down and ended up going about 15mph at the bottom. First gear tachs out at 5mph! Needless to say, it was kind of slick.
