Owner Reunited With Stolen Suzuki ATV — After 20 Years!

On August 31 of 1990, Andy Sillers of Tujunga, California, was trying to sell his ATV — a 1986 Suzuki LT 250r Quadracer. That afternoon while he was at the dentist — where they were probably playing the latest hit from Wilson Phillips or Sinead O’Connor quietly in the background — his quad was stolen out of his driveway.

Yesterday — April 28, 2010 – four months short of a full 20 years, Sillers and his ATV were reunited after the latest owner of the quad went to get the vehicle registered at the Department of Motor Vehicles, according to a story in today’s Whittier Daily News.

According to the story in the paper, Sillers figured at the time that somebody who had expressed interest in buying the quad decided he might as well pick it up for free! Now that its been recovered, the cops said the quad changed hands numberous times of the past 20 years, and they didn’t expect to charge anybody with the crime.

The QuadRacer hadn’t been registered since 1999, and when the newest owner went to register it, it triggered a VIN search, which flagged it as a stolen vehicle — from 20 years ago. The officials then had to search out Sillers, who had since moved to a suburb of Santa Barbara.

It’s truly one of those news of the weird stories. Sillers told the newspaper that he’s thinking of fixing up the ATV and getting it running. Good for him!
