PostSubject: What type of clutch do I have?   Sun Sep 26, 2010 10:35 am

I know this might be a silly question, but I'm going to ask. I have a 2010 Sportsman 500 H.O. and I don't know what kind of clutch is on it. I contacted QSC to see if they have a clutch kit for my bike. They do, but they have about 3 different ones that will go on it. They said they have to know which clutch I have on it now to send me the right one. I looked through the user manual and it showed me a clutching diagram thing I don't know much if anything about clutches. So what I'm asking is how do I find out which clutch I have on it now? I don't want to actually take a look at the clutch to figure it out because I won't have a clue what I'm looking at. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

On what type of clutch kit, it really depends, what type of riding do you do? Do you mind losing some top end? What type of transmission it is CVT.

I know what you mean...whether it has the electric engine brake or not....Correct? I would almost be sure yours does have it. Ask Jughead or Repoman on here...they will probably know. From what I have read thats the only difference in the kits. I know that about 95% of the mud racers that ride Polaris do have QSC kits and love them. If you going to try to trail ride it as well make sure you tell Adam you don't want a high stall. Its hard to get your bike set up for both racing and trail riding. Its actually impossible to get the best of both worlds in one set up. I would call Adam back and talk to him and he should know which one is on yours...cause he is a Factory Polaris Racer himself. He races for High Lifter. Let us know if we can help in any way. I will try to do some research on your bike and see what I can find out.

Well I was emailing QSC and here is some things they sent to me. "Yes we do but there is several kits for the 500. It could be a 209 kit or a 299.00 kit or a 319.00 kit depending on tire size, elevation, and which secondary clutch you have." "Polaris made a production change mid year...so with out looking at your clutch I can't send you the proper clutch kit. Have you ever had your clutch pulled apart? Give a call and we can walk you through the Polaris change so you can tell which style you have. Then we can get you the right clutch kit." "Yes, your machine has one of three clutches in it. Is the secondary clutch a TEAM clutch or a Polaris clutch? And if its a Polaris clutch it will either have a flat on each end compression only type spring, or does it have a tortional spring, the tortional spring looks like a normal spring except it is not flat on each end, the coils turn straight out at each end.
Thanks, adam"

Ok....I would pull the cover and take a picture of it and email it to Adam. I know what he is saying...either the secondary spring is like a Brutes or its like a Suzuki where the springs has a tip at each end that has to be turned "Preload Twist" to it. That is what I would do though...its not hard...just pull your cover off....take about 4-5 good pics of the secondary...which is the back one...not saying you don't know but just in case. Some call them Drive & Driven instead of Primary & Secondary. If you can email them to me I can tell you as well.

If your secondary spring has ends like this its the tortional type spring.

If they don't and its flat on each end its the compression type spring like the Brutes, Outlanders have on them.

You can probably tell once you pull the cover which one it has. I was just describe it to Adam as best as you can and he can probably tell that way...Hopefully! If not, let me know if I can help in any way. Let us know what happens.

Alright today I tried taking the big black cover off the clutch and I couldn't get it off it was so frustrating I would of had to take off a lot of plastic to take it off and I don't want to do that. Is there a different way I could find out what kind I have? User manual? Serial #?

The best way to do it, just dig right in. Just take off the plastic floorboards. Use a drill with the proper socket bit and a screw driver and a ratchet for the floor bolts. taking the floor board off should allow you to remove the clutch belt housing. use the same drill and socket bit to remove the cover (this will make it alot faster and save a bunch of time) but from reading all the previous post, your best bet is to just do it.

Email the Pics to Adam...! He can tell you whether its a Team Industries or not....he will need a close up of the back of the secondary...which is the one in the rear.

Will I need to take the secondary apart to get a picture, or can I just take a picture as it is?
