PostSubject: Routes to take around Windrock / Coal Creek   Thu Nov 24, 2011 12:06 pm

We are going to Windrock/Coal Creek tomorrow to ride (11-25-2011). Never been there before. Would someone suggest some trails and routes. Like easy to moderate trails, do not want to jump canyons or anything. Not ready for extreme. We are using a Mule and a Honda Rincon. My understanding is you have to pay more for trails going to wind mills? Is this correct and how much extra?

One price covers all do Coal Creak property. You can't ride to the windmills but you can ride close to them.

We have a ride there tomorrow and you are more than welcome to ride with us. We will be at the miners shed in the parking lot leaving around 9.

Thanks for the offer but I'm a newbie and kind of embarassed to slow others down. Just wondering if some people have some routes out there that may be a fun but not to extreme ride. Would like my 12 year old son to get to drive some. Will be there the entire day I guess.

Mule, Rincon, Newbies = Trail 2, 4, 5, G6, G5. Go up Trail 2 all the way to top. You will cross several gravel roads. Just stay on trail till you come to G1 (Gravel 1). Take a left on G1, go past blacktop road and start up the mountain. As you go up bear right at each gravel road you come to. This will take you to the Windmills. Return back on same Gravel Road and after up pass the 2nd Gravel Road coming back look to your right for Trail 4. Take it to the end. At the end left turn on Gravel 20. Go down hill on Gravel 20 a little ways and you will hit a Gravel Road (G37) on your right. Take it to Trail 5. Ride Trail 5 all the way to the end. Turn left on Gravel 6. Follow it to the next Gravel Road on left which is Gravel 5. Take Gravel 5 to the end. At the end take a right and hit the pavement back to the parking lot.

Thank you. How is Trail 16 and 18? I bit too hard for newbies? I was considering Trail 1, 2, 16, 18, G1 and then to G39 somehow to see windmills if you can see from G39. I have wrote down your instructions to them as well.

1 and 18 might be a little much for newbies. Not sure how the Mule will perform on those trails either. Both have there rocky sections.

G39 is right next to Trail 4. Go on up farther past G39 and G40. You can get almost under the windmills.

We went yesterday Windrock. We did Trail 2 to G1 and the up to the windmills all Gravel, not sure the numbers, G2 maybe. Down to G37, Trail 5, G6, G5, and then Trail 22 back to parking lot. Took about 4 hours with stops to picture take and eat and to just look around.

I had a Honda Rincon and the other person had a Mule.

Trail 2 was pretty easy, maybe just a few places that woke me up.
All gravel was easy of course. Let my son drive most of that.
Trail 5, for the first 10 yards was a little tricky (gullies) but then after that it was easy.
Trail 22 was pretty rocky. I think the Mule bottomed-out a few times. A little tricky in places, made my rider a little nervous (12 year old son).
Had a great time.

You selected some good trails and sounded like you had a good time. Trail 18 and 16 would not be your cup of tea. Mule would have a difficult time.

Trail 24 is a nice one that has an overlook in the middle. I also think you could do Trail 4.

I have a Honda Rincon and the guys going with me have Yamaha Big Bears

Below are the trails I did before. Suggest any other routes for me to take? I prefer easy but not just gravel. Just like some nice trail riding nothing to extreme....liek something neat to look at like waterfalls, overlooks, ponds, etc...

Oh, going this Saturday (Feb23).

Not many people there this Saturday. Still enough to talk with, ask directions and opinions about certain routes. There is a big landslide on G20 heading over to Trail 5 and top of that Rock Crawl hill (maybe 45). We went back and used G5 to get to the bottom of the Rock Crawl hill and walked up and had lunch. Seen some other guys go across the landslide place, it was possible but at my age, pain hurts too much. Had a good time.

Glad you had a good time. That slide has been there for a few months now. Hopefully it will dry up some so Rooster and crew can shore it up.
