PostSubject: Need help with Suzuki Vinson    Thu Oct 04, 2012 8:01 pm

Been a while since I been on here and I hope everyone is doing good. I need a little help if someone knows. I got mt daughter a 05 Suzuki Vinson 500 automatic and coming down a steep grade it has very little if any hold back, it is scary if it is a rough spot because it will slide in the rear even if the front breaks are used also. We have it in low and 4 wheel drive but it seems like the clutch is not working right. Do you think I need a new belt or maybe a low torque clutch kit. I have the manual Vinson and always had manals so I know very little about the auto's so any help would very appreciated. Thanks, Mike and Holly

Not sure if I can add anything. I had the Manual Shift Vinson. Never had any problems with hold back, but you could control that with a manual shift.

Not sure if I understand what you are saying. You said it Locks the Rear end up and she starts to slide when going down a hill using the front brakes?

When you get on the back brake it wants to slide and you have to use the front brakes more to keep it from sliding like the motor is not holding back at all. I rode it today and would give a little gas going down the hills and seemed like it keeps the clutch locked in but if you don't give it a little gas it's like the clutch is not working.

When you tried it today, were you in High Range or Low Range?

You must give it a wee bit of gas to slow down with engine breaking otherwise it will free wheel - most all ATV auto clutches are that way -
Having said that it is deffinatly possible to help the problem with clutch modding .
It will be less likely to break if the clutch is dirty so start there but be careul wht you use to clean it -
Ill have to find out where the web site nyroc went - its very informative

You got to be in low range and 4 wheel drive but you got to keep it slow are it is hard to get stopped. Thanks darkstar will check it out.

Well that being said is what I was looking for as an answer from you.

The Suzuki's have excellent Engine Braking in Low Range, but in high Range it will break away quick. I would always drop mine in Low Range - 4x4 on steep grades. Sometimes 4x4 in High Range would work on a slight steep grade. It is more technique.

You might be able to get a Clutch Mod like the COOP3 or similiar which would make both Low and High Range alot lower and it would stay down in the torque range longer.

In low gear if you go down a steep hill that is slippery you can lose total control - you would have to throttle even more - but the worst thing that happens is you do get engine breaking and since the wheels wont turn - its like you have locked the breaks and its an out of control slide -Total slide - os that what happens ?
Clean her up and pratice a bit in high gear making sure to actually accelerate down the hill
Start slow and keep that clutch engadged but never brake so hard you lose total control which can happen in low - unless you throttle it good which some people are intimandated by until they get use to it
Just use a moderation of front to rear breaks - mostly front brakes unless we are talking a sick steep hill - then if you use front - you will front endo .
Try both and build up
Low will work as long as you keep some good throttle -
Remember - when you lose traction - youve lost ability to control the bike .
So whether low or high - keep the wheels spinning not sliding .
When braking - brake in light easy soft brakes - use the foot pedal lightly and at the same time throttle it .
Yep i said that Brake at the same time you throttle - now dont do this all the time - just try it - see how you like it - its pretty awesome for keeping control while the wheels spin and clutch is engadged
Takes pratice - i kinda wonder if you are sliding ??????
