PostSubject: Aetna Mountain Current Situation??   Mon Mar 02, 2015 9:31 am

Aetna Mountain had been embroiled in a struggle and controversy over the continuation of off roading there. I see a Facebook page dated Feb. 2015 stating they will soon open an official off road park there. Most recent was just after Valentines day.
Anyone got any reliable info on this?

I am not sure I even want to go there, but I am interested in the outcome of this.

I have not seen that. That would be interesting.

Aetna Mtn See if that works.

I am not interested in places like Wind Rock or rock crawling areas, but if this pans out and provides another area of access then I'm happy about it. I might go one time just to say I'd had that experience. I'm all about finding new places and things to see.

Mine too! Well worth the 240 mile drive one way. Plenty to ride and beautiful views. Something for everyone.
The other thing I like is I'm riding an area that offers permits and allows me to ride legally.

Life is different for different people. I'm a hiker and backpacker with a spouse who hates backpacking and will hike, but its not his favorite thing to do. We compromise. I have a hard time sitting still.
I am a nature girl and a photographer and interested in exploring. If the scenery is not good, if there are not views, wildflowers, caves, waterfalls, interesting ecosystems like wetlands, then I am not down with it. I ride mainly to get to see this stuff. Wind Rock ... we wore it out in the beginning when it was first opened up. Now I avoid it. Kenny goes there once in a great while because he likes riding for riding's sake. I will never be that person.

I'll keep a watch on the Aetna Mtn thing. Who knows? Maybe it will pan out. Maybe it won't.

Dkoogler you should spend alot of time in The Cove sez darkstar.

I wish I could, but if I did... I wouldn't see the stuff I'm seeing elsewhere. I am NOSEY. I am married to a man who is also NOSEY. We are a match made in Heaven.. and probably headed for jail.

But we'll have a good time getting there. :-) We'll be back. The man is heading to Georgia to work. I'm out the door to Virginia in a few. going back to see my parental units.

Pretty sinkhole waterfall and sinkhole pond

Another sinkhole waterfall we had to ride right past. This one does not always have water on it.

I'm a member of the new park on Aetna. To make a long story short, the owner of the park is one of the people who has fought the hardest to keep that mountain open for OHV use. I'd encourage everyone to at least visit once and check the area out.

I rode dirt bikes there MANY years ago before they started shutting things down, but haven't been in a long time. I can remember some pretty hardcore hill climbs there, but not sure if they still exist.

I definitely wanna go back down and check it out. Is a permit required, and if so, how much?

Hmm.. I was aware of the Aetna Mtn thing, but the news I'm sitting on is VERY different.
I am glad I kept it to myself and think I shall for awhile longer in case it doesn't pan out after all.

Only parts of the mountain are open for riding Jerry. It would be best to get with someone who rides out there more often than I do before going. The park sells daily passes for $20 though.

One thing I saw that became a problem was that the Cummings Cove WMA .. which looks very tiny... was being ridden when apparently it was for foot traffic only? Am I understanding that correctly?

Correct. TWRA has very close ties with the subdivision at the foot of the mountain, that seemed to be the biggest factor in the closing of the WMA.

But the main trail or road has been declared public (even through the WMA, against the wishes of TWRA), thanks in large part to the efforts of the new park's owner. He and other land owners have been fighting (legally) for over a decade to keep Aetna Mountain Road open.
